Paula Deen Has Type 2 Diabetes, Still Eats Fried Foods "in Moderation" (omg!)

Paula Deen Has Type 2 Diabetes, Still Eats Fried Foods "in Moderation"

Paula Deen built her empire on a love of fried food, but the 64-year-old Food Network star made a shocking announcement Tuesday: she's suffering from Type 2 Diabetes.

"I was diagnosed three years ago during a regular physical exam with my doctor," Deen revealed on The Today Show. "I'm here today to let the world know that it is not a death sentence."

PHOTOS: Naughty star appetites

Deen chose to keep her condition private because she "had to figure things out in my own head...I had nothing to give with my fellow friends out there."

Now a paid spokesperson for Novo Nordisk, Deen is gearing up for the launch of Diabetes in a New Light, which offers "simple ways" to manage the disease.

"People are not going to quit eating. We quit eating, we're all out of here. I wanted to bring something to the table when I came forward, and I've always been one to think that I bring hope, because I've had lots of obstacles in my life, y'all."

When Al Roker repeatedly asked Deen if her diagnosis was a direct result of her butter-rich diet, she admitted that it's "part of the puzzle" but not the only factor.

Citing genetics, lifestyle, diet, stress and age, Deen said that like many baby boomers, "there's a good chance that [Type 2 Diabetes] will be one of the issues you have to face."

"Here's the thing: I have always encouraged moderation. On my show I share with you all these yummy fattening recipes, but I tell people, 'In moderation. In moderation,'" Deen explained. "I've always eaten in moderation," she said, adding that the recipes seen on her show account for only 30 meals a year.

"It's like I told Oprah [Winfrey] a few years ago: 'Honey, I'm your cook, not your doctor,'" Deen said. "You are going to have to be responsible for yourself."

Perry defends states' rights (AP)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry is blasting the Obama administration for intruding on states' rights.

In a Republican debate in South Carolina Monday night, the Texas governor said the state "is at war with this federal government and this administration."

He criticized the Obama administration for slapping down South Carolina's voter identification law, which would require voters to show a photo ID before casting a ballot. He also objected to the Justice Department suing the state over its tough immigration law.

The Texas governor said the most egregious example of federal government overreach was the National Labor Relations Board intervening in a right to work state. He was referring to a ruling against Boeing, which moved production from Washington to South Carolina.

Perry called the federal actions "irresponsible" and "unconstitutional."

Sugar found to help halt esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer is the eighth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and the fifth biggest in the United Kingdom so any new tools that enable doctors to detect and help fight it is probably more than welcome; which is exactly what this news from scientists working at the Medical Research Council will be.

It seems that one of our most common items may actually be able to help doctors detect a type of?esophagus?cancer called Barrett?s syndrome and remove the cancer cells.

As reported in the journal Nature Medicine that by using sugar researchers have been able to identify cancer cells during the cancer stage referred to as dysplasia, which is the time frame during which the cancer can be prevented by removing the cells.

The problem faced by doctors is being able to correctly identify those areas since they can be easily missed during endoscopy and biopsy. This can lead to a false sense of assurance for patients as well as unneeded treatments for those patients without dysplasia.

The researchers discovered a new mechanism for identifying Barrett?s dysplasia cells by spraying on a fluorescent probe that sticks to sugars and lights up any abnormal areas during endoscopy. By analyzing the sugars present in human tissue samples taken from different stages on the pathway to cancer ? using microarray technology developed by NYU?s Mahal ? they found that there were different sugar molecules present on the surface of the pre-cancerous cells. This technology uses sugar binding proteins, known as lectins, to identify changes in sugars and pinpointed carbohydrate binding wheat germ proteins as a potential diagnostic. When the wheat germ proteins, attached to a fluorescent tag that glows under a specific type of light, were sprayed onto tissue samples, it showed decreased binding in areas of dysplasia, and these cells were clearly marked compared with the glowing green background.

via Science Daily

This new discovery is especially important as the number of cases of?esophageal cancer has been on the rise in recent years and doesn?t look to be decreasing anytime soon.

Crude rises near $100 on Iran, Nigeria fears (AP)

HONG KONG ? Oil prices climbed near $100 a barrel on Friday on revived concerns over a possible embargo on Iranian oil and a strike in major oil producer Nigeria loomed.

Benchmark crude for February delivery rose 77 cents to $99.85 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2 to settle at $99.10 on Thursday in New York.

Brent crude rose 68 cents to $111.73 per barrel in London.

Crude fell sharply just before the close of trading on Thursday after a report that the European Union probably would not embargo Iranian oil until summer. But that optimism seemed to fade Friday as worries built up again about supply tightness this year.

Pressure from the U.S. on other nations to ban Iranian oil quickly in response to Iran's growing nuclear program has been sending jitters through global oil markets.

Japan, which imports about 10 percent of its oil from Iran, said Friday that sanctions must be considered "carefully and wisely" and that maintaining stable prices is critical for imposing effective sanctions on Iran. That follows comments Thursday by Japan's finance minister that the country would start reducing Iranian imports in support of the U.S. campaign.

"The question is whether OPEC suppliers will have enough capacity to meet market demands if they have to supply some extra for the Iranian customers" like Japan, said Natalie Robertson, a commodities analyst at ANZ Banking Group in Melbourne, Australia.

Excluding Iran, Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries have about 4.5 million barrels a day of spare capacity at the moment, down from 4.8 million barrels in 2010, she said.

Separately, a major union is threatening to halt crude oil production as part of a nationwide strike and protests starting Sunday in Nigeria ? the fifth-largest oil exporter to the U.S. Talks between union officials and Nigeria's government to avert a strike ended late Thursday night without any announcement. They are scheduled to resume Saturday.

Oil supply would be crimped in the short term if unions manage to shut down production.

Optimistic comments by the European Central Bank that the troubled eurozone economy is steadying and strong demand in bond auctions by Spain and Italy were being taken by traders as positive signs for the economy, which would result in higher demand for oil, analysts said.

"I think oil should continue to be supported going forward because we also have a general view that the U.S. dollar is going to remain weak," which makes commodities priced in dollars appear cheaper for those spending other currencies, Robertson said.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 2 cents to $3.07 per gallon and gasoline futures added 2.6 cents at $2.76 per gallon. Natural gas futures were down 1.2 cents to $2.69 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Scientists Identify Inherited Prostate Cancer Gene (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 11 (HealthDay News) -- The first major gene mutation associated with an increased risk for hereditary prostate cancer has been identified by scientists.

Men who inherit the mutation in the HOXB13 gene have a 10 to 20 times increased risk of developing prostate cancer, according to the study in the Jan. 12 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The HOXB13 gene plays an important role in the development of the prostate during the fetal stage and in prostate function later in life.

The discovery of this gene mutation may help improve understanding about the development of prostate cancer and which men may require early screening for the disease, according to the team led by investigators at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of Michigan Health System.

The researchers analyzed DNA from the youngest prostate cancer patients in 94 families that had multiple cases of the disease among close relatives, such as fathers, sons and brothers. Members of four different families were found to have the same mutation in the HOXB13 gene. All 18 patients in those four families had the mutation.

The investigators then looked at 5,100 men who had been treated for prostate cancer and found that 1.4 percent (72) of them had the same HOXB13 gene mutation. The men with the mutation were much more likely to have at least one first-degree male relative (father or brother) who also had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

When they looked at a control group of 1,400 men without prostate cancer, the study authors found that only one of the men had the mutation.

The researchers also looked at data from men enrolled in studies of early-onset or familial prostate cancer.

"We found that the mutation was significantly more common in men with a family history and early diagnosis compared with men diagnosed later, after age 55, without a family history. The difference was 3.1 percent versus 0.62 percent," Dr. Kathleen Cooney, a professor of internal medicine and urology at the University of Michigan Medical School, and one of the study's two senior authors, said in a Hopkins news release.

"It's what we've been looking for over the past 20 years," added fellow senior author William Isaacs, a professor of urology and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "It's long been clear that prostate cancer can run in families, but pinpointing the underlying genetic basis has been challenging and previous studies have provided inconsistent results."

An estimated 240,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. While the HOXB13 gene mutation may account for only a small number of prostate cancer cases, it may provide clues about how this cancer develops and help to identify a group of men who might benefit from early or additional prostate cancer screening, the researchers said.

Fancy Blackstonesucks.com? Blackstone got in first (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Blackstone Group LP, the world's largest private equity asset manager whose industry in the United States is in the political crosshairs, is seeking to prevent people from registering negative internet domains by acquiring them first.

Blackstone has registered several domain names critical of the buyout firm through MarkMonitor, a company that describes itself as an "enterprise brand protection" firm, a search of the domain database on whois.com showed on Tuesday.

Blackstone appears to have a sensitivity to criticism that "it sucks". Variations of Blackstonesucks.com and StephenSchwarzmansucks.com were among those registered by MarkMonitor. Stephen Schwarzman is the co-founder and chief executive of Blackstone.

"Registering defensive domain names is a very common practice for large brands. Defensive domain names can represent 90 percent or more of a large brand's portfolio," MarkMonitor spokeswoman Te Smith said, declining to comment specifically on Blackstone.

Rivals for the Republican nomination for the U.S. presidency are leading a full-blown assault on front-runner Mitt Romney's track record at private equity peer Bain Capital, leading the rest of the industry to fear collateral damage.

Private equity professionals are having to defend their record as job creators against popular criticism of them as asset-strippers in pin-striped suits, saddling companies with debt, selling their assets and taking dividends.

"This is a routine defensive move to protect ourselves. Any company that is in the public eye will take similar measures," Blackstone spokesman Peter Rose said.

Still the firm may have some more domain registering to do to cover itself on that front. Although blackstonesucks.com may be taken, whois.com as of Tuesday showed blackstonesucks.net available for $9.88 per year.

Domain Name Wire reported on Blackstone's internet purchases earlier on Tuesday.

Space Sabotage (Time.com)

Oh Russia, you used to do paranoia so much better. The Evil Empire got its name in part because of its nasty post-World War II habit of gathering up little, nearby countries -- countries that didn't strictly want to be gathered up -- in order to build a buffer on its western flank. That was un-neighborly, but at least understandable. You try living next to Germany for the first half of the 20th century and see if you don't try to double-lock the door.

But the Cold War is over, Germany's been housebroken and there's less need than ever to see hostile foreigners lurking behind every bush. You wouldn't have known that this week this week, however, to listen to Vladimir Popovkin, the director of Roscosmos, the Russian space agency.

It's been a bad couple of months for Roscosmos, ever since an ambitious Russian Mars probe was launched on Nov. 9, headed to the Martian moon Phobos to collect and return a sample of extraterrestrial rock and soil. The ship, named Phobos-Grunt (or Ground) fell a wee bit short of its target, never making it out of Earth orbit after an upper stage booster failed. Now, as all things stranded in low Earth orbit must, the probe is headed home, set to reenter the atmosphere and break apart sometime between Jan. 14 and 16. The best estimate so far is that the precise moment of impact will be 1:18 PM, Moscow time, on Jan. 15, and the precise place will be the Indian Ocean.

In announcing this news on Tuesday, however, Popovkin couldn't resist deflecting the blame for the mission's failure, suggesting -- with an exquisite lack of subtlety -- that the mission may have been sabotaged by another country (America, we're looking at you), using an antisatellite weapon. "We don't want to accuse anybody," Popovkin said, accusing somebody, "but there are very powerful devices that can influence spacecraft now." In case you were wondering, that's Russian for "I'm just sayin'."

OK, so what exactly is Popovkin's claim? It's true that when Russian spacecraft fail very early in their missions -- just as they're getting their footing in orbit -- the problem often occurs when the craft is flying over the Western hemisphere, where any imagined skeet-shooting from the U.S. would take place. "The frequent failure of our space launches," he told the newspaper Izvestia, "which occur at a time when they are flying over the part of the Earth not visible from Russia, where we do not see the spacecraft and do not receive telemetric information, are not clear to us."

Maybe, but they should be. It's a basic rule of orbital mechanics that if you want to adjust your flight path when you're on one side of the planet, you have to begin the maneuver while you're still on the other side. Accelerate when you're over the Western hemisphere and your altitude will increase by the time you're over the Eastern. Decelerate and you'll be flying lower half a revolution later. By definition, Russia's key early maneuvers in any flight must thus take place while they're flying through our orbital neighborhood -- just as ours take place while we're flying through theirs.

None of that means we're responsible for the breakdowns -- or that we'd even have the technical capability for such technological meddling. That didn't stop another Russian official, Nikolai Rodinov, who once oversaw the country's strategic early warning system, from suggesting that powerful electromagnetic impulses -- a nicely vague but just-plausible-enough weapon -- were to blame.

It's worth noting that the U.S. would have absolutely nothing to gain and a whole lot to lose by monkeying around with a Russian Mars probe -- especially since we're now completely dependent on Roscosmos rockets to ferry us up and down to the NASA-built International Space Station. Offend our designated driver and we could be left without a lift. It's worth noting too that Roscosmos hardly needs us to help them not get to Mars. Since 1960, Russia has launched 19 missions to the Red Planet and has had precisely 19 partial or total failures. Five missions did achieve a portion of their goals -- putting a Martian satellite in orbit but failing to get a lander to the surface, for example -- but none have been unalloyed triumphs. The U.S., has had its own Martian disasters in the past, but it's had a six-mission winning streak going since 2001 and has a seventh Mars ship on the way now.

The loss of Phobos-Grunt is an equally big loss for space science as a whole. A sample return mission has been in NASA's long-term plans for years, but budget constraints have caused the agency to postpone the project repeatedly. Space watchers in both the U.S. and Russia were rooting for this mission to succeed -- as was China, which had a small Martian orbiter riding along. All of that will crash and burn -- literally -- within a few days. Traveling to Mars has always been a very, very hard thing to do, and it will continue to be. You don't need an imaginary U.S. plot to make that so.

First Person: What My College Degree Means to Me (ContributorNetwork)

*Note: This was written by a Yahoo! contributor. Do you have a personal finance story that you'd like to share? Sign up with the Yahoo! Contributor Network to start publishing your own finance articles.

My college degree helped me pursue a successful 30-year career in advertising and public relations. However, it only happened after I realized I had not made the right decision in choosing my college major.

Pursuing The Major Course I Wanted

It all began when I had earned four years of tuition under the GI Bill of Rights by serving in the U.S. Navy. Ever since childhood, I had wanted to be an artist, and that was my chance to enroll as a fine arts freshman at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art (now the University of the Arts).

An Enjoyable Fine Arts Education

Throughout my undergraduate years, I appreciated the challenges and encouragement of the school's excellent teaching staff. My courses consisted of drawing, painting, sculpture and other fine arts classes. Some of my paintings were accepted for exhibition at local galleries. I was graduated with top honors and the degree of bachelor of fine arts.

Then it was time for me to earn a living from what I had learned in four years of college. I made the rounds of the many galleries in Philadelphia and New York selling my art, and had some moderate success. However, the sales were few and far between, and my income wasn't nearly enough to support myself.

Had I Made an Error in Judgment?

After a year, I came to the conclusion that I had chosen a field that, while traditionally attractive, wasn't practical in the reality of today's business world. While I hadn't wasted my four years of fine arts studies, they had not prepared me for the necessity of making a living.

I had several choices. I could go on painting, get some kind of part-time job to pay my bills, and hope I'd eventually become a successful exhibiting artist. The other choice was to go back to college and major in practical business subjects.

Fortunately, an application I'd sent to the University of Pennsylvania earned me a lab assisantship and free tuition at the Annenberg Graduate School of Communications there. I majored in mass communications and public relations, with a minor in graphic arts. After two years, and armed with a much more practical resume, I began another job search.

A Favorable Career Turn

Another fortunate opportunity coincided with earning my Master of Arts in Communications degree. Prudential Financial, Inc. was just establishing an Eastern regional office in a Philadelphia suburban area, and hiring a staff of more than 3,000 employees. I applied for the newly-created position of Public Relations and Advertising Manager, and was hired to direct the 30-person creative staff.

I recently retired after 30 years with Prudential. Today I consider my education choices and experiences may be of value to college students in the same situation I was after earning my bachelor's degree. Looking back, I had not realized then the impracticality of attempting a fine arts path in the real world where income opportunities are very limited.

Business-related degrees are essential in finding practical career promises. I believe my decision to enhance my education goals beyond fine arts to communications offered me those opportunities. For today's students, armed with the right credentials and personal determination, there's no limit to the heights that talent, hard work and ambition can earn for them.

US redefines rape to count more people as victims

(AP) ? The Obama administration says it is expanding the FBI's more than eight-decade-old definition of rape to reflect a better understanding of the crime and to broaden protections.

The new definition counts men as victims for the first time and drops the requirement that victims must have physically resisted their attackers.

Vice President Joe Biden, author of the Violence Against Women Act when he was in the Senate, said the new definition announced Friday is a victory for women and men "whose suffering has gone unaccounted for over 80 years." Calling rape a "devastating crime," the vice president said, "We can't solve it unless we know the full extent of it."

The change will increase the number of people counted as rape victims in FBI statistics but will not change federal or state laws or alter charges or prosecutions. It's an important shift because lawmakers and policymakers use crime statistics to allocate money and other resources for prevention and victim assistance.

The White House said the expanded definition has been long awaited as many states and research groups made similar changes in their definitions of rape over recent decades.

Since 1929, the FBI has defined rape as the carnal knowledge of a female, forcibly and against her will. The revised definition covers any gender of victim or attacker and includes instances in which the victim is incapable of giving consent because of the influence of drugs or alcohol or because of age. Physical resistance is not required. The Justice Department said the new definition mirrors the majority of state rape statutes now on the books.

Congress approved $592 million this year to address violence against women, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking, under the Violence Against Women Act and Family Violence Prevention and Services Act. Of that amount, $23 million goes to a sexual assault services program and $39 million to a rape prevention and education program administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Obama administration had sought $777 million to combat violence against women.

The change likely will result in big increases in the number of reported rapes, but it was not immediately clear how big. To take just one example of how the FBI totals will change, Chicago didn't report any rapes to the FBI for 2010 because its broad definition of the crime didn't match the FBI's narrow definition.

The change has been sought by women's groups for more than a decade.

The Women's Law Project, on behalf of more than 80 sexual assault coalitions and national organizations concerned about violence against women, wrote FBI Director Robert Mueller in 2001 that the narrow definition reflected gender-based stereotypes and requested it be changed.

Using the old definition, a total of 84,767 rapes were reported nationwide in 2010, according to the FBI's uniform crime report based on data from 18,000 law enforcement agencies.

Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the U.S. have been raped at some time in their lives, according to a 2010 survey by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which used a broader definition.

The revised FBI definition says that rape is "the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object," without the consent of the victim. Also constituting rape under the new definition is "oral penetration by a sex organ of another person" without consent.

The BCS as we know it is going away (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? The Bowl Championship Series as college football fans have come to know it is going away.

Over the next six months, the people who oversee the much-maligned postseason system will talk about how to deconstruct the system for crowning a national champion. In the tumultuous 14-year history of the BCS, never has there been more of an appetite for change among college football's leaders.

"It's my impression that ... there will be meaningful discussion about possible changes to the BCS," Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive said Thursday as SEC rivals LSU and Alabama prepared to play in the title game Monday night at the Superdome.

What the changes will be is hard to say because nearly everything seems to be up for discussion, from eliminating automatic bids to top-tier bowl games to creating a four-team playoff ? an idea that's known as the plus-one model.

What's not on the table is exactly what many football fans are clamoring for, a full-scale playoff that would require numerous teams to play additional games.

Still, there is likely to be a BCS extreme makeover in the 2014 season.

"There will be 12 people in the room making decisions and each one comes from a different perspective, but the unifying thing is to make this thing the best it can be," BCS executive director Bill Hancock said. "I don't think there is any leader in the clubhouse on these possible changes. I think there could be 50 things on the table, with no leader in the clubhouse.

"I think the reason for that is we are being more diligent to solicit ideas for change than the last couple times we went through this."

The last time was 2008. That's when Slive, with the support of Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford, made a push for the plus-one model to the nine other FCS commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director.

Slive's proposal was unceremoniously shot down.

Simply put, the plus-one would match the No. 1 team in the BCS standings after the regular season against the No. 4 team in a bowl game, and No. 2 against No. 3 in another, creating two national semifinals.

The winners would play in a championship game the following week.

It's a format that Alabama coach Nick Saban has always liked.

"I just feel that only having two teams sort of takes a lot of teams out of it," he said media day in New Orleans.

Currently, the top two teams in the BCS standings after the regular season, including conference championships, advance to the title game. It's a format that's led to frequent debates about whether the right teams were getting a shot to play for a national title.

This year's controversy involved whether Alabama (11-1) should get a second chance at undefeated LSU or if Big 12 champion Oklahoma State (12-1, including its bowl victory over Stanford) had earned a shot to play for the national title.

The BCS has often caused as many arguments as settled them, and drawn the ire of fans all over the country in the process. It's also come under pressure from a political action committee called PlayoffPAC, and been the subject of a congressional hearing and a Department of Justice inquiry. Even President Barack Obama has said he doesn't like it.

Apparently, all that consternation is starting to register with the decision-makers in the sport.

"I sense that people who run college football and run the conferences obviously are not tone-deaf," said Burke Magnus, ESPN senior vice president of college sports programming.

The structure in place, with four bowl games ? the Orange, Sugar, Rose and Fiesta ? each taking turns hosting the championship game, in addition to its bowl, could handle the plus-one.

Slive said that he will not be the one championing the plus-one this time around.

"I'm eager to hear from my colleagues about their views, but I fully anticipate that there will also be a meaningful discussion about the plus-one," he said.

Standing in the way of the plus-one last time were the Big Ten, Pac-10, Big East and Big 12.

Since then, the Pac-10 has become the Pac-12 and it has a new commissioner, Larry Scott, who has quickly established himself as one of the most forward-thinking leaders in college sports. Previous commissioner Tom Hansen was adamantly against a plus-one. Scott is willing to listen.

"We don't have a definite opinion on that or any other model yet," he said. "It's a little premature. Those conversations are going to start in earnest this spring and I'll have opportunities to talk to other people informally within our conference and with other conferences between now and then."

The Big 12 has an interim commissioner, with Chuck Neinas replacing the ousted Dan Beebe, who was a vocal opponent of any type of playoff. The embattled Big East has a new commissioner, too. John Marinatto has been busy trying to save his league, and it's doubtful the conference is in a position to be a force in the upcoming BCS negotiations.

What hasn't changed is the Big Ten's stance, led by its influential commissioner, Jim Delany.

Delany is steadfastly against a full-blown playoff and has said his biggest fear with the plus-one would be that once a four-team playoff becomes a reality it would inevitably grow.

"I don't necessarily think the slippery slope is theoretical," he said last month. "I think the slippery slope is practical."

But Delany has come out in favor of another potentially major change to how all the other marquee bowl games are set: the elimination of automatic bids.

The Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, ACC, SEC and Pac-12 champions receive automatic entry into the BCS. One champion from the Mountain West Conference, the Western Athletic Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, the Mid-American Conference and Conference USA can potentially earn an automatic bid each season by reaching certain BCS standings targets.

That format has allowed teams such as TCU and Boise State to play in the BCS, but it's also created a class system.

A free-market system would ostensibly mean the most-deserving teams would play in the biggest games. But the free-market in college football is often more about earning potential for bowl organizers than performance on the field, which could lead to more opportunities for brand-name teams from the power conferences and less for upstarts such as Boise State.

It's clear there is much work to be done before June, when BCS officials will need to have a new format in place to negotiate the next television contract. The current ESPN deal runs through the 2013 season and the network will get first crack at retaining whatever postseason system is created.

"We've had a fairly lengthy timeline with the current process," Slive said. "It's time to take measure of where we were. What's working. What isn't working. I think it's time. I think it's a good time."

Man beaten with baseball bat in his driveway

SAN ANTONIO -- A man was attacked and beaten with a baseball bat at his home on the Northwest Side early Friday.

The attack happened at a home on Country Dawn near Prue around 1:00 a.m. Friday. After the assault, police say the victim jumped in his car to follow the men who did it. But he lost control of his car and crashed at Prue Road and Westfield. He was treated at the scene.

Police say when they went back to the man's home, they discovered drug baggies, a shotgun, and several knives. They are now investigating to see if any charges will be filed in connection with the items found.

The suspects who beat the man with the baseball bat got away.

Investigators suspect the incident may have been a drug deal gone bad.

With CM Punk walking out Chael Sonnen, who should walk with Mark Munoz?

Pro wrestling champion C.M. Punk is getting involved with MMA ... sort of. He will walk out Chael Sonnen for UFC on Fox 2 at the United Center in Chicago. Punk is from a far southwest suburb of Chicago, and always gets a huge ovation when he performs in the city with the WWE, so Sonnen is playing the right card. With Punk by his side, there's little chance that Sonnen will be booed, as he is so often.

What is Mark Munoz to do? Sonnen's opponent is well-liked and will undoubtedly have Chicago's sizable Filipino community on his side, but it's hard to combat a WWE champion's cheers. Who could walk out with Munoz to give him a louder ovation? As a Chicago native, I have a few suggestions of Chicagoans with enough pop to make the United Center? explode.

-- Derrick Rose: He's the NBA MVP and the man who brought good basketball back to Chicago.

-- Mike Ditka: Da Coach still has plenty of love.

-- Oprah Winfrey: Her studio was just down the street from the United Center.

-- Former Mayor Richard Daley: Da Mayor could have won another 20 elections before deciding to step down last year.

Who are we missing? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook of Chicago's best bets to get Munoz some cheers.

PFT: Ponder will stay starting QB, Vikings say

Robert Kraft, Clark Hunt, Dean Spanos, John MaraAP

On Tuesday, Chargers president Dean Spanos shocked the NFL not by firing his coach and G.M. but by not firing them.? On Tuesday evening, Spanos explained the decision in a phone interview with PFT.? (Some would even call it an ?exclusive interview,? since Spanos was speaking ?exclusively? to PFT at that specific moment in time.)

Spanos reiterated his belief that Smith and Turner are the best men to lead the team at this specific time.? ?If I thought they were the wrong guys,? Spanos said, ?I wouldn?t think twice about making a change.?

But Spanos realizes that there could be ramifications, if the fan base doesn?t agree.

?I?m sure it?s going to be a challenge this year,? Spanos said as to the task of selling tickets.? The team had multiple blackouts in 2011, and the Chargers routinely had to scramble to sell non-premium tickets to several other games.

But Spanos seems to think that a changing of the team?s coach and/or G.M. wouldn?t have made the turnstiles spin any more quickly.? ?There?s a certain percentage of fans that until we go out and win, I don?t think it?s going to make any difference,? Spanos said.

So the task is to win.? And Spanos realizes that making changes for the sake of making changes when the front office and the coaching staff are producing teams that can compete for playoff berths on an annual basis could spark a constant cycle of change.

Winning without firing the current coach and G.M. nevertheless will require some adjustments.? Spanos said the team may be more ?proactive? in free agency.

He also expressed dismay and confusion regarding the recent rash of injuries, calling it a ?huge concern? and explaining that the training staff ?can?t come up with a common denominator? to explain why so many players are getting hurt.

?Maybe we?re drafting players who are more prone to injury,? Spanos said.? ?Maybe we are taking too many chances.?

When it comes to keeping Smith and Turner, Spanos decided that making a change would be taking too much of a chance.

Caucuses looming, Paul to spend weekend in Texas (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is at or near the top of polls in Iowa, where he's drawing big crowds and has an enviable campaign organization. But with Iowa's caucuses on Tuesday, the Texas congressman plans to head home for the weekend, the latest evidence of an unconventional approach to winning the GOP nomination.

From his low-tech events and his relatively small entourage to his reluctance to glad-hand voters, the 76-year-old Paul has stubbornly adhered to his own campaign playbook with seemingly little regard for the calendar or the shifting dynamics of the GOP field.

The rest of the contenders braced for a grueling weekend of campaign events. Paul, however, planned to fly home late Friday night to spend the weekend with his wife, Carol. He was set to appear on several Sunday morning talk shows from Texas, and was scheduled to return to Iowa by Monday morning for a "whistle-stop" campaign tour with his son, Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican.

"He's a family man and he wants to spend time with his family," said Paul's Iowa campaign chairman, Drew Ivers.

Leaving Iowa just three days before the kickoff nominating contest of the 2012 election is one of many quirks that set Paul's campaign apart from the more traditional presidential hopefuls.

Paul's schedule is a model of efficiency. Events start on time, and he delivers the same remarks at each one, no matter the location or size of the crowd. He speaks favorably of Iowa's importance in the nominating process but never forcefully asks audience members for their vote.

His venues are typically stark ? no bunting, no music, no booming sound system. Voters sit quietly, as if listening to a university economics lecture.

Paul never strays from his message of limited government, free markets and the importance of the Constitution, even when the moment might call for a different approach ? like when a 10-year-old autistic boy asked Paul on Friday what he might do to help children like him.

"The most valuable resource for children, teenagers, college kids and adults is liberty. If we protect those liberties we will have the maximum amount of progress," Paul said. Later, he assured the boy he did not plan to slash health care for children or the elderly if elected.

Paul has refused to engage rivals like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, even as they have stepped up their criticisms of his foreign policy views and his lack of legislative accomplishments in Congress. He also rarely criticizes President Barack Obama, insisting that both parties are responsible for excess spending and debt.

He saves his attacks for campaign commercials and interviews. He told Bloomberg News on Friday that he might not be able to support any of his rivals because they embraced the status quo in Washington.

"If ... they don't want to change anything on foreign policy, they don't want to cut anything, they don't want to audit the Fed and find out about monetary policy, they don't want to have actual change in government, that is a problem for me," he said.

Paul travels with a small band of trusted advisers including a son-in-law, Jesse Benton, who doubles as his campaign chairman. Two of Paul's adult granddaughters, Linda and Lisa Paul, have also joined him in Iowa.

Carol Paul has made only limited appearances with her husband, showing up at debates and other major events.
