Vaccination Clinic Helps Many Families and Their Pets | WREG.com ...

Posted on: 4:20 pm, September 29, 2012, by Elise Preston, updated on: 10:37pm, September 29, 2012

(Memphis) Memphis Animal Services helped hundreds of pet owners, by hosting a vaccination clinic Saturday.

10-year-old Hank did not like getting vaccinated Saturday, but owner Dan Garber says, it just had to get done.

??He`s kind of like my kid. My wife and I don`t have kids. We have a dog. To keep him healthy is the most important thing in our lives,? said Garber.

At just eight bucks for each shot, Hank and about 270 other animals received vaccinations to help ward off many diseases animals can come across, like rabies. ?

? Everything is so expensive these days. Where I can save money, it?s great,? said Garber.

Same goes for Thaddeus Hubbard and? his 2-year-old Rottweiler, Princess.

?I took her to the vet. They wanted 100 dollars just to see her. I didn`t want to pay that much,? said Hubbard.

So for more than a year, Hubbard didn?t.

? I had been putting them off for a while, because I didn`t want to pay the price,? said Hubbard.

Until he heard Memphis Animal Services would help keep his pup healthy and strong at just a fraction of the price.

?She got all three shots,? exclaimed Hubbard.

?You got to do these very year,? said Tracy Dunlap with Memphis Animal Services.

According to Dunlap, the city chose to help out families in the struggling economy, and its help that?s greatly needed in the city.

?A lot of times people will turn in their animals because they are sick and they may not be able to take care of them.? If we can keep the animals from getting sick, that keeps them off the streets and out of our building,? expressed Dunlap.

Dunlap says Memphis Animal Services will more than likely do another vaccination clinic in the near future. Which is good news for Hubbard. He might have saved on Hank`s shots, but the German Shepard,? Lab mix still has to eat.

?About 40 dollars every two weeks on this dog,? said Hubbard.

New European statistics released on heart disease and stroke

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? The statistics show that efforts to reduce heart disease deaths are successful, with mortality now falling in most of the continent. At the same time, the report shows the huge burden CVD presents to Europe's health, and suggests that underlying factors may cause CVD to increase in the near future.

The figures show some progress. Since the 2008 report there has been a substantial drop in the number of deaths attributed to heart disease. CVD is now responsible for four million European deaths annually, down from 4.3 million in 2008 (which represents a drop from 48% to 47% of total European deaths). Within the EU, it is responsible for 1.8 million deaths per year, down from two million in 2008 (40% of all EU deaths, down from 42%)2.

Commenting, ESC President, Professor Panos Vardas said: "There is good news here, but it needs to be approached with some caution. Fewer lives are being lost to cardiovascular disease than in 2008. At the same time, the scale of the problem is enormous. CVD is still responsible for four million European deaths per year. This is a real human tragedy and a significant economic burden. We anticipate this burden will continue to increase in the coming years due to aging populations and unhealthy lifestyles."

Dr. Hans Stam, President of the European Heart Network, said: "This reduction in CVD mortality is a real success story. A few years ago it seemed that the rise in cardiovascular disease was unstoppable; this report shows that we have reversed that trend, and that lives are being saved. At the same time, we know that there are potential problems ahead. Diabetes and obesity are rising, smoking is still a major issue, and people are still not doing enough physical activity. The continent is also growing older. Today's figures are good, very good, but they must not lead to complacency."

The report contains a range of European comparators, giving the latest available figures on mortality, morbidity, treatment, smoking, diet, physical activity, alcohol, blood pressure, cholesterol, overweight and obesity, diabetes, and financial implications for each country. Key statistics include:

  • CVD hits women especially hard -- it is the main cause of death for women in each of the 27 EU countries3.
  • CVD is the leading cause of death for men in all the EU countries except France, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain3.
  • Stroke is the second single most common cause of death in Europe: accounting for almost 1.1 million deaths each year. Over one in seven women (15%) and one in ten men (10%) die from the disease3.
  • There are huge differences in CVD mortality within Europe. For example, for men CVD causes between 60% (Bulgaria) and 25% of deaths (France) and for women between 70% (Bulgaria) and 30% of deaths (France and the Netherlands)4.
  • The prevalence of diabetes is high, with more than 50% rises in some countries in the last decade. This, plus increasing obesity levels, is threatening to reverse the improvements of recent years5.
  • The economic burden of CVD is huge, estimated ?196 billion a year, of which around 54% is due to direct health expenditure; 24% to productivity losses and 22% to the informal care of people with CVD. The impact on national health care systems is approximately ?212 per year6, per person, in the EU.
  • The figures also show substantial regional differences. Central and Eastern Europe saw large increases in CVD deaths in the years up to the turn of the century, but now mortality rates in this region are declining significantly. For example, over the 2003-2009 period, the rate of coronary heart disease (CHD) deaths in Russian men dropped from 251 to 186 (per 100,000). Nevertheless, these figures are still huge in comparison with other areas in Europe: for example, the UK has a male mortality rate of 33 per 100,000, and in the Netherlands this rate is 16 per 100,000 (2009 figures)7.

Dr. Stam highlighted that CVD is a chronic disease with a heavy impact on the individual, health care budgets as well as the economy at large. "Today most public health expenses are linked to treatment. It is urgent to invest in prevention in order to improve the health of European population and stem the socio-economic consequences."

Professor Vardas concluded: "The drop in CVD mortality across Europe is due to a range of factors, not just a single initiative. For example, over the last few years we have taken steps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and to highlight the dangers of smoking. These measures have helped enormously, but at the same time many lifestyle-linked changes, such as increasing obesity and diabetes, will make it harder for us to stand still. Most of cardiovascular related deaths are preventable. EHN, the ESC and its partners will continue to lobby for the implementation of changes in legislation and for population interventions in order to promote a healthier environment."

Rhincrew Luke and Galtee Max in conflict for the Grade A2 500 metres flat race ?

The Grade A2 500 metres flat has pulled together quite a few entries who have the potential to bag the ?102 prize money of the event. The 500 metres race will be hosted by Sheffield on Monday, 24th September. One of the most commendable and prosperous hounds up for the challenge tonight is the two-year-old brindle dog, Rhincrew Luke.

The lightly raced hound has progressed from the Grade T races to the Grade A2 and A3. He has won two out of the five career outings and has improved drastically through the last five races.

The N. Melbourne trained won the Grade A3 500 metres flat race on 11th September, 2012 at Sheffield. Breaking out of the second trap and then ruling over half the distance had him on the other end of the wire in 29.36 seconds. His lead of three lengths shoved Tamara into the second slot.

Striking a back-to-back, Archaton Pine?s son took charge of the track from the second spot, and landed the race in 29.78 seconds.

With the final ? of a length in his favour, the two-year-old had Outlier Rudi settling in the second position.

The 5 to 2 entry will once again race in the blue vest after having drawn the second trap.

A candidate to look out for is the two-year-old, Galtee Max. The E. Parker trained has a good fan following at Sheffield, and has won at the venue at several occasions. Ever since 12th May, 2012, he has raced over 500 metres only.

Crash?s son has won twice out of the last four outings.

He captured the Grade A2 500 metres flat on 20th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Picking up pace just when it was required, and then dealing with the cluster tactfully, had him charging on from the first spot, and reaching the wire in 29.67 seconds.

Next he nailed the Grade A2 500 metres flat race on 30th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Shifting from first to second stall did not break the winning composure due to the winning technique that got him beyond the wire in 29.57 seconds.

Galtee Max has drawn the box right next to Rhincrew Luke, the first trap.

Goodbye Firing Squad: Why Panel Interviews Are Bad for Hiring

If there?s one truly divisive aspect of the hiring process, it?s the panel interview.

Some companies swear by it, claiming that this stressful test is a good way to test a candidate?s mettle. Other companies decry it as nothing more than an ineffective and off-putting leftover from the HR manuals in your grandfather?s attic.

Interestingly enough, opponents of the panel interview have recently become much more vocal than the supporters, and today more and more companies are turning away from what some have called the ?firing squad? interview format.

To help us understand this new phenomenon, we asked several anti-panel HR pros to explain their theories on why this traditional hiring device is bad for business. Here?s what they had to say.

Panels can compromise candidate responses

Panel interviews can be incredibly stressful for candidates, much more so than one-on-one conversations. This added burden tends to affect their behavior, making them appear to be much less confident and competent than they really are.

?The panel-style interview can be intimidating to candidates, especially if questions are asked rapidly with minimal opportunity for the candidate to ask his or her own questions,? says Michele St. Laurent, the director of recruiting at Boston-based Insight Performance. ?This could result in the candidate not performing at his or her full potential, thus causing the company to miss out on a candidate that may actually be qualified.?

Roberta Matuson, president of Matuson Consulting and a regular blogger for Fast Company and ERE.net, puts it more bluntly: ?Imagine what it would feel like standing in front of a shooting squad,? she says. ?That?s what it feels like to many when they are faced with a row of people ready to take aim and fire their questions. You?ll get much more honest answers when candidates are relaxed and their guard is down.?

Group thinking isn?t clear thinking

As the saying goes, too many cooks spoil the broth.

This is especially true of job interviews. When you?ve got multiple hiring managers providing input, it?s far too easy to end up ignoring the best candidate and settling instead on the one candidate that everyone agrees upon.

?People interpret information differently,? says Chris Delaney, the founder of UK-based Employment King. ?While one interviewer may receive a candidate?s response positively, the next might mark the response as a red flag.?

To add to the problem, panel interviews rarely end up being fair assessments.

Several of our experts testified that, more often than not, one interviewer dominates the questioning. This leads to a one-sided interview, and a clouded impression of the candidate is the result. ?When most of the interviewers are following the leader of the panel, you aren?t going to be able to make a fair judgment about the candidate,? says Delaney.

Panel interviews don?t endear you to candidates

Interviews are a two-way street. While they help you determine whether a not a candidate is a good fit for your company, they also help that candidate determine if your company is a good fit for his or her career.

As Marsha Murray, president of Murray Resources, says, ?Panel interviews are not conducive for building rapport between the interviewer and the candidate.?

Caroline McClure, the principal of consulting service ScoutRock, elaborates. ?In the panel interviews I?ve witnessed, the candidate often sits in silence while the panelists furiously take notes. It sends the message that the candidate?s time is not valued. A panel interview compromises the two-way assessment. Even worse, it sends signals to the candidate that the hiring entity lacks sophistication.?

Two?s Company ? anything more is a crowd

Though our experts all have their own opinions on why panel interviews aren?t as effective as other interview formats, they all seem to agree on the best alternative. Instead of interviewing by panel, stick to a two-person team instead.

?You should never interview alone,? says Olark CMO Sunir Shah. ?Pair up. That way you have another person to provide perspective on your opinion.?

That sounds like solid advice from where we?re sitting. By keeping your team small, you can learn more about candidates while simultaneously giving them a better impression of who you are and what you do.

So if you?re looking to hire a new employee for your company, it might be a good idea to put the panel interview to rest. If these HR pros are correct, you?ll be surprised to discover just how easy it is to find quality employees when you abandon the firing squad.

ageless scented: News and Society -Crime News Blog

Early this year, a suicide bomber that exploded on his way to his target in Damaturu, Yobe State of Nigeria was reported to be shouting that he was doing the 'work of God' and that he would not stop. But that was just before he died after the impact of the explosion threw him into a ditch. I remember that televised little girl that was laden with explosives and smuggled into Israel sometime ago, but before the bomb could go off, she started pleading that people should help her dismantle the bombs because she didn't want to die. It was indeed very emotional watching her live on television. Definitely, she was sent on that mission against her will. Yes, so many like her who are fortunate to find any way of escape do so, but may never return to their people, otherwise they would be killed for abandoning the 'work of God'. Work of God indeed!

Just last week, two suicide bombers operating on a motorcycle were shattered as their bombs on their way to carried out attacks on the ever busy Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna. Thank God that the planned attack was divinely stopped, otherwise, hundreds of families would have been thrown into mourning that Tuesday afternoon. There have been scores of such suicide bomb attacks in the northern part of country in recent times and thousands have been killed. Now, the questions are: What motivates a person to detonate explosives to kill him/herself and others? How do the terror groups get finances and their couriers? Who trains them? What religious and psychological manipulations do they receive before their missions? Are there also diabolical aspects of the mission? Why do they always have charms, amulets and Spiritists with them?

And strangely at the above-mentioned Kaduna incident, after the explosion killed the would-be bombers, suddenly a strange swarm of bees appeared at the scene and dispersed the crown that gathered to witness the incident. It was televised. True! Are they truly working for God? The 'God' of sorcerers and murderers? And most importantly, for our discussion here, is their any reward of paradise, many wives or eternal prize awaiting them after death??

Suicide bombings as we are now witnessing in Nigeria and many other parts of the world are basically carried out by Jihadists; those who forcefully want to impose their religious beliefs on others. They dubiously do this under the guise of fight for their religion or brethren which they often claim are under threat. But it has been proved that these efforts are never propelled by religious but by political, social and economic motives. Or how else do you explain the attacks on national, financial, media, humanitarian and even same religion institutions. But we can't go into all of those here. We'll just try to comment on the religious and psychological aspects of this satanic enterprise.

The suicide bombers (and all Jihadists) are always thoroughly brainwashed before they embark on these evil missions. They are made to believe that they and their religion are hated. And this brainwashing takes a time of constant, well-planned and coordinated series of indoctrination. This is part of the reason why they are often kept in a camp for a period of time or they have sat under the teachings of other pro-jihadists who masquerade as clerics. There, they would systematically be fed with lies and hate messages about their targets until they believe and make up their minds for the mission; which they are always deceived into believing that they are doing the work and will of God, and that they will be rewarded with paradise, wives, gifts and so many other false, dubious and satanic promises.

But not for the high-level of deception and other diabolical involvement surrounding these missions, one would have expected the would-be bombers to always ask their sponsors how murdering an innocent person would earn an eternal reward when the Almighty, our cultures and even human instincts have warned us against such. Secondly, if truly there are eternal rewards, why do these terror masters always exempt themselves and their relatives from going on such missions? Look at the case of Osama Bin Laden, as he was sponsoring and coordinating these missions all over the world, he carefully gathered his wives and children into a cosy palatial home in Pakistan, which worth millions of dollars. And we learnt he sternly warned his children not to take his path.

Then, in Nigeria, some of the members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect currently terrorising the country have told us how the leadership of the group would always exempt their tribesmen and relations, but would assign and prepare others for suicide missions. They also gave the account of how these leaders would appropriate the widows of the bombers, the stolen exotic cars and money to themselves.

The truth is that there is no paradise or eternal blessing awaiting a suicide bomber or any other murderer for that matter. That promise is definitely from the Devil; the master of deception. But unfortunately, the unrepentant murderers would have found out but too late that they died in vain. Sadly, from the excruciating painful death through the piercing shrapnel of explosives to hell fire; where there will be suffering, weeping and gnashing of teeth forever. Till next week, God bless!

Mitsubishi drops details on plug-in hybrid Outlander

World Premiere of Mitsubishi Motors' Outlander PHEV with State-of-the-Art Plug-in Hybrid EV System at 2012 Paris Motor Show

- Together with premiere of European version of MMC's new global compact car for one-two eco-punch -

Tokyo, September 5, 2012 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will present the global debut of the new Outlander PHEV at the 2012 Paris Motor Show (or "Mondial de L' Automobile 2012") held from Thursday, September 27th through Sunday, October 14th*1. The Outlander PHEV uses the Plug-in Hybrid EV System powertrain developed by MMC and derived from its lineup of all-electric models.
*1: For more information please visit http://www.mondial-automobile.com/en/ (English).

Outlander PHEV is the world's first plug-in hybrid SUV and offers the best of three worlds: the environmental performance of an electric vehicle (EV), the cruising range of a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, and the on- and off-road performance of an SUV. MMC is due to bring Outlander PHEV to market first in Japan early in 2013.

Alongside the Outlander PHEV, MMC will be displaying a total of 11 vehicles (seven on press days) on its stand at the Paris Motor Show, including: the new European version of MMC's global compact car (called Mirage in other countries) which makes its debut; the ASX compact crossover which has been refreshed for the 2013 model year; and a display model of the i-MiEV Evolution 100% electric racecar which took part in the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held in the United States in August.

1. New Outlander PHEV

The new Outlander PHEV, to be unveiled for the first time at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, is based on the new Outlander which first debuted in Russia in July and is to be introduced in other European markets starting from September. The Outlander PHEV uses MMC's own Plug-in Hybrid EV System powertrain derived from 100% electric systems used on the i-MiEV and other MMC all-electric vehicles. The Outlander PHEV is the world's first plug-in hybrid SUV, and brings together the environmental performance and quietness that distinguish EVs while delivering the utility and on- and off-road performance associated with 4WD sport utility vehicles and the cruising range of a conventional ICE-powered vehicle.

Targeting the mid-size category and above, which require extended cruising range, the Outlander PHEV's Plug-in Hybrid EV System fuses together the EV technologies proven on MMC's i-MiEV - the pioneering 100%-electric car brought to market in 2009 - with the very latest ICE environmental technologies, including MMC's MIVEC*2 variable valve timing system. Employing electrical power stored in the drive battery by charging either at home, a charging station or when the system recovers energy when decelerating, the Plug-in Hybrid EV System gives the Outlander PHEV gasoline-sipping performance, with a target combined fuel efficiency*3 in excess of 61 km/liter, greatly superior to that of vehicles powered by a conventional engine, and a cruising range in excess of 880 km, which is on a par with a conventional ICE-powered car.
*2: Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system.
*3: Representative fuel efficiency figure based on a combination of the vehicle's fuel consumption when driven in all-electric mode, called the plug-in fuel efficiency, and when driven in hybrid mode, called the hybrid fuel efficiency (measured via Japan's JC08 mode)

MMC will introduce Outlander PHEV in the Japanese market in early 2013 then sequentially roll out the model in Europe, North America, and other markets around the world. Some major features are introduced below.

1) Automatic Selection of Three Drive Modes for Optimal Efficiency

Depending on driving conditions and remaining battery charge, the Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain automatically selects the optimum drive mode (see below) for comfortable driving while providing superior fuel efficiency.
a) EV Drive Mode
EV Drive Mode is an all-electric mode in which the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electricity from the drive battery. With zero on-road gasoline consumption and zero CO2 emissions the driver can enjoy quiet and very eco-friendly performance in this mode.
b) Series Hybrid Mode
In Series Hybrid Mode the gasoline engine operates as a generator supplying electricity to the electric motors. The system switches to this mode when the remaining charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level and when more powerful performance is required, such as accelerating to pass a vehicle or climbing a steep gradient such as a slope.
c) Parallel Hybrid Mode
In Parallel Hybrid Mode the gasoline engine provides most of the motive power, assisted by the electric motors as required. The system switches to this mode for higher-speed driving when the gasoline engine operates at peak efficiency.

2) High-capacity Drive Battery Offers Driving Versatility

The high-capacity 12 kWh lithium-ion drive battery gives Outlander PHEV an EV Drive Mode cruising range of over 55 km (JC08 mode*4), sufficient for all-electric operation in most everyday situations*5.
The driver can also manually switch to Battery Charge Mode in which the gasoline engine acts as a generator and charges the drive battery whether the vehicle is stationary or on the move. Battery Charge Mode gives the driver the flexibility to use the gasoline engine as a generator at any time they want; for example if the driver wants to use EV Drive Mode at a specific time, they can make sure the drive battery has enough energy for that time.
*4: An official method of measuring vehicle fuel consumption introduced by the Japanese government.
*5: "Most everyday situations" is based on a JCAP (Japan Clean Air Program) study conducted in Japan which showed that on average, 85% of Japanese drivers drove less than 55km per day.

3) Twin Motor 4WD System Provides Superior Response

The Outlander PHEV uses a Twin Motor 4WD system comprising independent electric motors to drive the front and rear wheels. In addition to decreased friction loss Twin Motor 4WD delivers better response and finer control than conventional mechanical systems. It accomplishes this without a propeller shaft or other mechanical components seen in conventional mechanical systems. The Twin Motor 4WD system is integrated with Mitsubishi's well-proven S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system to deliver high levels of stability and all-terrain performance and ensure the vehicle behaves just as the driver intends it to.
In addition, the front and rear electric motors generate maximum torque immediately, an inherent characteristic of electric motors, giving acceleration comparable to that of a vehicle powered by a large displacement high-output ICE and allowing Outlander PHEV to deliver superior levels of environmental and driving performance.

2. European version of new global compact car

The European version of MMC's new global compact car (Mirage in other regions) is a compact car developed focusing on high fuel efficiency, affordability and compactness - the universally recognized values sought in a compact car- and which meets the needs both of an "eco-car" for advanced countries and of an entry-level car for emerging countries.
Following its March 2012 debut in Thailand, where it is being produced, the new global compact car has been introduced in ASEAN countries and in Japan to high acclaim from customers. The new model is due to be rolled out all over the globe, next in Europe, Australia, and other markets. Introduction in Europe is slated for February 2013.

Against a backdrop of ever-more stringent CO2 emission regulations, demand for "eco-cars" is growing in Europe. The European version of the new global compact car delivers CO2 emissions of only 92 g/km (1.0-liter 3-cylinder MIVEC engine with 5-speed manual transmission version). The European version of the new global compact car achieves this through the use of environmental performance-increasing methods including exhaustive weight reduction (845kg, 3710mm long, 1665mm wide), aerodynamic drag reduction (CD of 0.27, measured in-house), the use of an all-new 1.0L three-cylinder MIVEC engine, along with the adoption of Mitsubishi's own Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) idling stop system. With its compact body dimensions the European version of the new global compact car delivers easy-to-drive maneuverability and peppy performance while at the same time maximizing interior occupant space through its high-efficiency packaging.

3. Other models

1) 2013 ASX (European version)

The ASX is a compact crossover launched in European markets in May 2010 and is proving popular for its quality and sporty exterior and interior design as well as for its outstanding motive and environmental performance.
After undergoing a number of subtle changes mainly on the exterior, the 2013 ASX is due to be released sporting a more refined and high-quality design this autumn.

2) i-MiEV Evolution

The i-MiEV Evolution is a 100% electric racecar which uses the same motor, drive battery and other major components as the production i-MiEV but with a race body designed to reduce weight and deliver maximum aerodynamic performance. Comprising a single motor driving the front wheels and two motors driving the rear wheels the car's electric 4WD powertrain delivers superior motive performance and outstanding handling and stability.
Entering for the first time, i-MiEV finished second in the Electric Division of the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held last month in the United States. Participation in the event allowed MMC to collect valuable data and knowhow that will be applied in the development of future models featuring electric powertrains or electric/ICE hybrid powertrains.

3) MiEV House

Also on display at the Paris Motor Show will be the MiEV House which was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show last year and the Geneva Motor Show this March.
Starring the i-MiEV, the MiEV House is a demonstration of how recycled drive batteries and other EV components, as well as solar panels and electricity charging stations can be used to maximize the efficient use of domestic energy. It is an example of the application of an EV in an integrated renewable energy system which couples a Home Energy Management System (HEMS).
With HEMS monitoring and regulating household and EV power usage in combination with auxiliary battery-stored energy and renewable energy from solar panels, energy usage efficiency is maximized to lower power consumption without interrupting normal household power usage.

Bill Clinton to make case for Obama re-election

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - Jumping to the defense of an ex-adversary, former U.S. President Bill Clinton will argue on Wednesday that Americans must re-elect President Barack Obama to restore a vibrant economy that creates jobs.

Clinton, the Democrats' most popular elder statesman, caps the second night of the Democratic National Convention with a speech designed to remind voters of the budget surpluses and job growth he led in the 1990s during his two terms in the White House.

Obama needs Clinton's help to recapture some of the magic that carried him to victory in 2008. The president is struggling to rekindle strong job growth and faces a tough fight against Republican Mitt Romney at the November 6 election.

Clinton will appeal for more time for Obama to fix the economy and reduce the jobless rate of 8.3 percent, according to excerpts of a speech to be delivered later.

"He inherited a deeply damaged economy, put a floor under the crash, began the long hard road to recovery, and laid the foundation for a more modern, more well-balanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs, vibrant new businesses, and lots of new wealth for the innovators," Clinton will say.

'CANDID' RELATIONSHIP

The two men have had strained ties at times, going back to the bitter 2008 Democratic presidential primary battle when the former Illinois Senator defeated Clinton's wife, Hillary Clinton. But Clinton has since campaigned energetically for Obama.

Asked by NBC News about his relationship with Obama, Clinton was frank: "It's quite good, actually. It's candid, it's open. We haven't been close friends a long time or anything like that, but he knows that I support him."

Clinton rejected the criticism of Obama's economic leadership leveled by Romney and fellow Republicans at their own convention last week in Tampa, Florida.

"In Tampa, the Republican argument against the president's re-election was pretty simple: We left him a total mess, he hasn't finished cleaning it up yet, so fire him and put us back in," Clinton will say, according to the excerpts.

Clinton's appearance was to be the capstone on a sometimes chaotic day at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina where Obama had to personally intervene to force back into the party platform language declaring Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel.

The wording was omitted from the document to show more even-handed support in the Arab-Israeli dispute. But that risked angering Jewish-American voters who are a key Democratic constituency.

In an embarrassing development after a strong start to the convention on Tuesday, it took three voice votes to bring back the language.

Forecasts of thunderstorms put a crimp on Obama's nomination party, forcing Democrats to move his planned acceptance speech on Thursday from a 74,000-seat outdoor football stadium to a much smaller indoor venue.

The shift to the Time Warner Cable Arena was a setback for Obama, who hoped to create a visual spectacle in Charlotte's Bank of America stadium on Thursday to rival his 2008 acceptance speech in a football stadium in Denver.

It was also a letdown for tens of thousands of Obama supporters from around the country who had been given tickets to the biggest speech in Obama's campaign.

Central Dauphin School District (PA) Chooses Safe?Connect to ...

TAMPA, FL ? September 4, 2012 ?Impulse Point, provider of the industry?s most scalable and easiest to deploy and maintain BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) solution, announces that Central Pennsylvania?s Central Dauphin School District has selected Safe?Connect? to manage and secure its recently implemented wireless network and help meet the District?s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative.

Central Dauphin School District (CDSD) has chosen Safe?Connect to manage its wireless network and extend it to students and faculty, allowing access to a variety of learning resources such as Moodle and ScholarPort. Safe?Connect, widely implemented by both leading colleges and K-12 school districts to meet 1-to-1 computing initiatives, identifies and authenticates mobile devices and provides a mechanism to assess and enforce network security policies in real time.

?We looked at other vendors, but Safe?Connect became the clear choice based on its ease of implementation and management and on our budget,? said Matthew P. Sinopoli, director of technology services. ?The easiest part of this whole process was setting up the technology. Because Safe?Connect is so flexible, we can bring on new mobile and wireless devices with just a few commands to the router. Those are the big things that stood out to us.?

Pennsylvania is in a statewide movement toward digitizing the learning environment and reducing the economic and environmental impact of paper text books and is driving districts like CDSD toward implementing a 1-to-1 computing environment where every student has access to a computer. While the district provides some students with laptops, limited resources make providing district-owned computers to every student challenging. With Safe?Connect, CDSD is able to allow students and staff to bring their own mobile devices to use safely and securely on District-owned networks.

Intuitive User Experience and Centralized Management
CDSD wanted to provide an intuitive user experience that allowed students and faculty to get on-line easily, requiring little to no intervention from the IT staff. Safe?Connect?s easy-to-install process made user-driven implementation quick and simple. CDSD also wanted centralized management and control of the network to ensure that students were using the network resources for educational purposes only.

?While we don?t control the student?s device, we want to make sure they aren?t using District resources to access social media sites, communicate during tests, or access the District?s internal networks,? said Sinopoli. ?With Safe?Connect, I?m able to maintain centralized control and easily set up rules that limit gaming, peer to peer, and streaming media.?

By the end of the school year, CDSD had on-boarded students and faculty in its two high schools, with a plan to implement the middle and elementary schools in the future. Because Safe?Connect?s technology is not dependent on any particular network switch or software vendor it was easily integrated into CDSD?s Cisco-based network architecture without requiring costly upgrades or time-consuming switch manipulation.

About Impulse Point
Impulse Point delivers the industry?s most scalable and easiest to deploy and maintain Network Access Control (NAC) solution. Safe?Connect? is the BYOD solution of choice for large, diverse environments ? such as Education ? where the ?Consumerization of IT? is driving the need to provide endpoint security policy enforcement for a myriad of personally?owned, non?managed, mobile computing devices. Deployed and supported as a managed service, Safe?Connect?s rapid installation, network independence, and track record of reducing help desk calls results in lower total cost of ownership and reduced risk. Customers currently entrust the security of more than three million endpoints to Impulse Point. Visit www.impulse.com

Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note now targeted by Apple lawsuit

Apple v Samsung Galaxy S III

Apple has amended a lawsuit they filed back in February against Samsung, and is now including four new devices to the original 17 they say violate their patented technology. The additions are the Galaxy S3 (Galaxy S III), the Verizon specific Galaxy S III, the Galaxy Note, and the Galaxy Note 10.1. These devices will join the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S II, T-Mobile Galaxy S II, AT&T Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, Illusion, Captivate Glide, Exhibit II 4G, Stratosphere, Transform Ultra, Admire, Conquer 4G, and Dart on the smartphone side, and the Galaxy Player 4.0, Galaxy Player 5.0, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablets.

The patents Apple is claiming are being violated are:

The "Data detector" patent was successfully used against HTC to block the One X and EVO 4G LTE from import back in December 2011, while the others have been met with limited success around the globe.

The battle between these two is far from over folks -- last weeks news was just the beginning. Expect more as this develops further.

Genetic link to prostate cancer risk in African Americans found ...

? Prostate Cancer news ? Sep 01, 2012

Prostate cancer in African-American men is associated with specific changes in the IL-16 gene, according to researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.

The study, published online in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, establishes the association of IL-16 with prostate cancer in men of both African and European descent.

?This provides us with a new potential biomarker for prostate cancer,? says principal investigator Rick Kittles, UIC associate professor of medicine in hematology/oncology.

Previously identified changes in the gene for IL-16, an immune system protein, were associated with prostate cancer in men of European descent. But the same changes in the gene?s coded sequence - called ?polymorphisms? - did not confer the same risk in African Americans.

Doubt was cast on IL-16?s role in prostate cancer when researchers were unable to confirm that the IL-16 polymorphisms identified in whites were also important risk factors in African Americans, Kittles said.

Kittles and his colleagues used a technique called imputation - a type of statistical extrapolation - that allowed them to see new patterns of association and identify new places in the gene to look for polymorphisms. They found changes elsewhere in the IL-16 gene that were associated with prostate cancer and that were unique to African Americans.

Polymorphisms result from DNA mutations and emerge in the ancestral history of different populations. People of African descent are much more genetically diverse than whites, Kittles said, making the search for polymorphisms associated with disease more difficult.

Although the effect of the particular changes to the gene appear to be different in men of African versus European descent, it is likely that several of the polymorphisms in the gene alter the function of the IL-16 protein.

?This confirms the importance of IL-16 in prostate cancer and leads us in a new direction,? Kittles said. ?Very little research has been done on IL-16, so not much is known about it.?

?We now need to explore the functional role of IL-16 to understand the role it is playing in prostate cancer,? he said.
