  • Cranberries:? Researches have discovered that cranberries have five times the antioxidant content of broccoli, which means they may help protect against cancer, stroke and heart disease.? Limit the cranberries to about 4 ounces per pint of juice.

  • Lemons and Limes:? You can also add half a lemon or lime (leaving much of the white rind on).

  • Fresh ginger:? This is an excellent addition if you can tolerate it.? It gives your juice a little "kick"! And, as an added boon, researchers have found that ginger can have dramatic effects on cardiovascular health, including preventing atherosclerosis, lowering cholesterol levels, and preventing the oxication of low-density lipoprotein (LDL).

No. 7 Notre Dame stops No. 17 Stanford 20-13 in OT

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Notre Dame knew what was coming. Stanford doesn't get cute inches from the goal line.

And after three years of getting pushed around by the Cardinal, the Fighting Irish pushed back, winning the most important shoving match they've had all season.

Or did they?

A wall of Notre Dame defenders stopped Stepfan Taylor inches from the end zone on fourth down in overtime and the seventh-ranked Irish remained unbeaten with a 20-13 victory against the No. 17 Cardinal on a soggy Saturday in South Bend.

Taylor went up the middle and was knocked back, but kept reaching and turning with bodies underneath him. His knee never did hit the ground before reaching the ball across the goal line. But the officials ruled it was too late. The whistle had blown, and that meant the play was stopped.

Taylor finished with 102 yards on 28 carries. He needed 103.

The celebration had to wait for a replay review. The call stood. Irish fans who weren't already on the field spilled out of the stands, and Notre Dame's national title hopes remained alive. The Irish are 6-0 for the first time since 2002.

"Physically, we controlled the line of scrimmage," Irish coach Brian Kelly said of the last play. "Classic. Classic goal line stand."

Stanford coach David Shaw wasn't so sure.

"I didn't get a view of the last play," Shaw said. "Stepfan swore to me that he got in. That he put the ball over the goal line on the second effort. The officials looked at it and they said he didn't get in, so he didn't get in."

TJ Jones made a reaching 7-yard touchdown catch from Tommy Rees on the first overtime possession to give the Fighting Irish a lead.

Stanford (4-2) responded by driving to a first-and-goal at the 4.

Behind his big, strong offensive line, Taylor ran for 1 on first, 2 on second and about a foot on third down. That left one play from inside the 1 and the Notre Dame defense, led by Carlos Calabrese, held up Taylor and moved him backward.

"When you're talking to your team all week about a heavyweight match, and you can't keep taking body blows, you have to stand in there and sooner or later, you've got to be the one that delivers," Kelly said.

It had been a few years since that was the case for Notre Dame against Stanford. The Cardinal had won three straight meetings, physically dominating the Irish, with Andrew Luck at the helm.

With Luck gone to the NFL, the Irish stood up to the bullies.

Rees relieved Everett Golson late in the fourth quarter, but this was different from when he did it against Purdue in September and led the Irish to a winning field goal. Golson took a helmet to the head during Notre Dame's game-tying field goal drive late in the fourth.

In the overtime, Rees floated a 16-yard pass to Theo Riddick to convert a third-and-8 to the 7. On the next play, he threw behind Jones on a slant and the receiver reached back for a sliding two-handed catch and a 20-13 lead.

"He made a great catch," Rees said.

Then the Fighting Irish defense, which has now not given up a touchdown in four straight games, made it stand.

"We knew they were going to run the ball," said Irish linebacker Manti Te'o, who made 11 tackles. "We knew that basically No. 33 (Taylor) was going to have the ball. So everybody had to do their job."

The Cardinal will head back home thinking they did their jobs, too.

"I thought he got in on the play before that, but it was a bunch of tough runs, a bunch of tough plays," Stanford quarterback Josh Nunes said. "It was a close play."

Almost half the field was covered with Notre Dame fans, as rain poured down during the postgame celebration. They didn't seem to mind.

Toss another victory into Notre Dame lore.

Jordan Williamson's 27-yard field goal with 6:12 put the Cardinal up 13-10, and the Fighting Irish drove into Cardinal territory when Golson absorbed the helmet hit from Usua Amanam that was flagged for 15 yards.

Golson came out looking shaken. Kelly said later the sophomore had blurry vision.

Rees came in and completed an 11-yard pass to Tyler Eifert, and then on third-and-4 from the 28 Eifert drew a pass interference call on Terrence Brown that gave the Irish a first down at the 13.

The Irish settled for Kyle Brindza's 22-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to tie it at 13.

Two of the nation's best defenses figured to dictate the game on a gray, wet afternoon and they didn't disappoint.

Notre Dame defensive tackle Stephon Tuitt was in the Stanford backfield all day and Te'o was all over Stanford ball carriers.

On the other side, Shayne Skov and Ben Gardner gave Golson and the Irish very little room to operate.

Golson alternated between scary and spectacular, completing 12 of 24 for 141 yards and a touchdown. He also lost two key fumbles ? one that Stanford's Chase Thomas recovered in the end zone in the second quarter for a touchdown and the other in the third that gave the Cardinal the ball back after Golson had made a long run deep into Stanford territory.

Thomas' touchdown put Stanford up 7-3, the first time all season Notre Dame had trailed.

Nunes had a similar day for Stanford, going 12 for 25 for 125 yards with two interceptions.

Notre Dame finally found the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. On a third-and-18 from the 24, Golson lofted a pass to the front corner of the end zone that the 6-foot-6 Eifert came down with for a 10-10 tie.

Nunes, Taylor and the Cardinal responded with their best drive of the game, a methodical 16-play, 65-yard march that took 8:03 off the clock and reached the Notre Dame 3. The Irish got a stop on third down, though the Stanford players contended they heard a whistle on the play and stopped playing. They settled for Williamson's field and a three-point lead.

The third season under a coach has traditionally been a memorable one at Notre Dame. Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and Lou Holtz all won national titles in Year 3 of coaching the Irish.

Kelly's third season in South Bend was already starting to feel as if it could be special, too. Against Stanford, the Irish raised the stakes even higher.

"We're halfway through the season, and six weeks left with this group," Kelly said, "I think they leave here knowing they can win if they stick with the plan."

New US visa rush: Build charter school, get green card

It's been a turbulent period for charter schools in the United States, with financial analysts raising concerns about their stability and regulators in several states shutting down schools for poor performance.

    7. When you and employer split, sparks can fly over social media

The volatility has made it tough for startup schools to get financing.

But an unlikely source of new capital has emerged to fill the gap: foreign investors.

Wealthy individuals from as far away as China, Nigeria, Russia and Australia are spending tens of millions of dollars to build classrooms, libraries, basketball courts and science labs for American charter schools.

In New York, foreign funds paid for the Health Sciences Charter School in Buffalo to renovate a 19th-century orphanage into modern classrooms and computer labs. In Arizona, overseas investment is expected to finance a sixth campus for the booming chain of American Leadership Academy charter schools.

And in Florida, state business development officials say foreign investment in charter schools is poised to triple next year, to $90 million.

The reason? Under a federal program created in 1990 and known as EB-5, wealthy foreigners can in effect buy U.S. immigration visas for themselves and their families by investing at least $500,000 in certain development projects. In the past two decades, much of the investment has gone into commercial real-estate projects, like luxury hotels, ski resorts and even gas stations.

Lately, however, enterprising brokers have seen a golden opportunity to match cash-starved charter schools with cash-flush foreigners in investment deals that benefit both.

"The demand is massive - on the school side," said Greg Wing, an investment advisor. "On the investor side, it's massive, too."

Two years ago, Wing set up a venture called the Education Fund of America specifically to connect international investors with charter schools. He is currently arranging EB-5 funding for 11 schools across North Carolina, Utah and Arizona and says he has four more deals in the works.

And that's just the start, Wing says: "It's going to be explosive."

Credit crunch
The charter school movement is somewhat controversial. Critics - led by teachers' unions - contend they divert much-needed funds from traditional public schools. Still, they have proved quite popular and now educate more than 2 million children in the United States.

Charter schools are publicly funded but privately run, sometimes by for-profit companies. They receive taxpayer dollars to educate each child who enrolls. Yet in most states, they get little or no public money to build classrooms, libraries and other facilities.

Well-established and successful chains of charter schools, such as KIPP, Green Dot or Achievement First, receive hefty support from philanthropic foundations and private donors. The chains can also tap into financing provided by an array of for-profit and non-profit investment funds created for that purpose.

But the charter school movement also includes hundreds of small, one-of-a-kind schools, often started by parents seeking a different educational environment for their children. Those mom-and-pop startups have always had a hard time securing funding to build their schools. Many have had to make do with makeshift classrooms in strip malls or church basements.

And lately, experts say, the credit crunch has worsened.

"It's a hard go," said Eric Hall, an attorney in Colorado Springs who advises charter school boards.

Last month, Fitch Ratings warned it was likely to downgrade bonds backed by charter schools because the sector is volatile and the schools are highly leveraged. Such risks mean charter-school debt is typically considered speculative, rather than investment grade, said Eric Kim, a director at Fitch Ratings.

Meanwhile, the IRS has signaled it plans closer scrutiny of charter schools' tax-exempt status if they rely on for-profit management companies to provide their classroom space and run their academic programs, Hall said. He sent his clients a long memo this summer warning that the stepped-up IRS oversight could put some at "significant risk."

If that weren't enough to make investors wary, several well-known charter schools have run into significant legal and fiscal hurdles in recent months.

Missouri regulators shut down six campuses run by Imagine Schools, one of the nation's largest for-profit charter chains, because of poor academic performance. A judge in California ruled that Aspire Public Schools, a large non-profit chain, hadn't secured the proper approval for six of its schools and would have to get permission from local boards of education to continue running them. Local officials yanked the charter of a high-achieving middle school in Georgia over concerns about mismanagement.

All told, about 15 percent of the 6,700 charter schools that have been launched in the United States in the past two decades have since closed, primarily because of financial troubles, according to the Center for Education Reform, which supports charter schools.

This fall alone, more than 150 established charter schools didn't open their doors to students.

Such volatility "will spook people, no doubt about it," said David Brain, chief executive officer of Entertainment Properties Trust, which has historically owned movie theaters but branched out to invest in charter schools, including the six that were shuttered in St. Louis.

Brain said the closures did not affect his company's bottom line and he remains convinced charter schools are a profitable sector. But even he's not ready to start backing untested startup schools.

Charter school administrators say they know that wariness all too well.

"Until you get that charter renewal that says you're doing good things" - typically after five years in operation - "banks won't even talk to you," said Hank Stopinski, principal of the Health Sciences Charter School in Buffalo. Without foreign investment, he said, "we would not have been able to do this project."

Recession-proof
The EB-5 program has drawn sharp criticism in the past. Some immigrant investors have lost both their money and their shot at U.S. citizenship when their American partners proved inept or corrupt. In the United States, critics have questioned the value of trading visas for scattershot investment.

Yet interest is surging. In the first nine months of this year, the government approved 3,000 petitions from foreigners seeking to participate in the program - nearly twice as many as were approved all last year, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Charter schools have become particularly trendy because they are pitched as recession-proof.

An investor forum in China last spring, for instance, touted U.S. charter schools as a nearly fool-proof investment because they can count on a steady stream of government funding to stay afloat, according to a transcript posted on a Chinese website.

Arizona educator Holly Johnson, who runs three charter schools and plans to open a fourth next year, said she couldn't believe how easy it was to secure $4.5 million in funding from abroad.

"We didn't have to do anything at all," she said, other than open her schools to potential investors. They didn't ask many questions, she said. Their concern was more basic: "They wanted to come over and make sure it was real."

Inner satisfaction
Eager to join the rush, Ali Faisal devoted a day this week to touring charter schools in Arizona.

Faisal, 37, is a Pakistani citizen who now lives in Calgary, Canada. He runs a technology consulting business that works with oil and gas companies and says he is eager to expand to the United States. He figures the best way to do that is to get a green card.

And the best way to do that, he said, is the EB-5 program.

Participants can get a temporary visa by investing $500,000 to $1 million in a federally approved business. If the business creates or preserves at least 10 jobs in two years, the investor and his immediate family are eligible for permanent residency in the United States.

"It's a much easier path," Faisal said.

He decided to put his money in a charter school, he said, because that way he felt he'd be serving society as well as helping himself. The schools he saw impressed him with their rigorous science curriculum and he said he hoped his investment would help nurture a new generation of American entrepreneurs.

"Investing in some type of hotel," Faisal said, "will not give me that inner satisfaction."

Exclusive: India's HMEL bought 2 million barrels of Iranian oil: sources

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's HMEL, part-owned by steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, has emerged as a new oil client of sanctions-hit Iran, potentially complicating New Delhi's bid for a renewal of its waiver from U.S. sanctions for buying crude from Tehran.

HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd (HMEL) has taken two shipments of Iranian oil since the start of September to maximize margins at its 180,000 barrels per day (bpd) Bathinda refinery in northern India, two sources with knowledge of the deals told Reuters. The purchases came to a total 2 million barrels.

In June Washington granted India a waiver on sanctions that would have cut it off from the U.S. financial system because it had reduced its purchases of the OPEC nation's oil.

India's waiver from the sanctions, which are designed to dissuade Tehran from pursuing its nuclear program, will only be renewed in December if imports have been cut further.

Mark Dubowitz, a U.S. lobbyist for tougher sanctions on Iran and head of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, said HMEL was taking a significant risk in buying this oil.

"The U.S. government in December will be looking to see whether India has indeed significantly reduced its purchases of Iranian oil and the addition of one more customer - especially with significant exposure to the U.S. and Europe - will raise eyebrows in Washington," Dubowitz said.

HMEL is part-owned by Indian tycoon Mittal, who heads ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker. ArcelorMittal produces 35 percent of its steel in the Americas and 47 percent in Europe, according to the company's website.

State-run refiner Hindustan Petroleum Corp and Mittal own 49 percent each in the joint venture HMEL.

A spokesman for Mittal said he could not confirm or deny the purchase, but said that being a minority shareholder, Mittal himself would not be involved in such decisions.

While India's state-run refiners are adhering to the government's verbal order to cut imports from Iran by at least 15 percent, their efforts could be undermined by private refiner Essar and now HMEL.

"We are cutting imports from Iran at the cost of our bottom line and private refiners are increasing volumes at our cost," said an official at a state-run refiner, who did not wish to be identified.

"This may hit the plan to get the waiver renewed and shows discord between private and public companies. We are the only ones helping the country."

Essar sources, however, said their Iranian crude purchases would average 85,000 bpd in financial 2012/13 (April-March), a decline of 15 percent from an originally contracted 100,000 bpd. From April-August Essar has bought an average 102,000 bpd.

IRAN CRUDE TO RAMP RUNS

The United States wants allies to reduce oil imports from Iran substantially as it tries to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program, which the West thinks is aimed at building atomic weapons. Iran denies this.

As Tehran's second-biggest crude customer, India is crucial to U.S. efforts to squeeze Iran, but New Delhi needs to satisfy the growing energy demands of its economy, Asia's third-largest.

HMEL's oil purchases came on Iran's suezmax vessel Magnolia in September and Lantana in October, said the sources, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue. Suezmaxes can carry up to 1 million barrels of crude.

"They are buying heavy grades from Iran because they are ramping runs at the refinery," said one of the sources.

An HMEL spokeswoman said that, as a policy, the company does not provide details of its crude oil sourcing.

The Bathinda refinery has also processed oil grades from Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the sources said.

In September HMEL bought a million barrels each of Arab Medium and Khafji, while for October it is scheduled to lift 2 million barrels of Arab Medium from the kingdom.

"I am sure they can get good discounts (on Iranian oil). The problem is banking. If they can resolve it, they get cheap crude and not illegally," said one Asian oil trader.

None of the sources were aware of the payment mechanism that HMEL would use for oil imports from Iran.

Indian refiner Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL) has not received Iranian oil since February as it could not open an account with Turkey's Halkbank, which is used by other Indian refiners to pay for oil from Tehran in euros.

"How HMEL will make its payment is yet to be seen," said one of the sources.

The rial has plunged in the open market against the U.S. dollar and has boosted inflation in Iran.

I Must Be Trippin': "Foster Friday" Guest Post - How Foster Care Has ...

When I asked for non-foster parent volunteers to share how foster care has touched them for last week's "Foster Friday" Guest Post, I received an amazing response. ?I decided to post a "Part Two" for the topic and allow more people to share their stories this week.
Karen (Biological Daughter of Foster Parents and Social Work Major) ? ? ?I am the biological daughter of foster parents. ?I?m 20 years old, and I am studying social work in university. ?I have 3 biological siblings, I?m the second oldest. ?For as long as I can remember, I?ve loved babies, and have wanted another younger sibling. ?For years, my little sister and I would beg our parents for a brother or sister, and when they told us it couldn?t happen anymore, we told them ?You could adopt!? ?Then eventually we learned about fostering - we had friends who fostered, and many of their babies changed our lives forever- particularly one, who our family baby-sat quite frequently. ?We eventually succeeded in our attempts, and about a year and a half ago we were opened as a foster family for infants. ?It has changed my life. I have gained 2 ?sometimes sisters? who are not always in our home, but will forever be in our hearts. ?When most people think about fostering, they think about the loss and the grief. ?And yes, while those are major parts of fostering, I can?t begin to imagine all the things I would have lost out on had my parents not made the decision to foster. ?My parents? fostering is preparing me for the day when I will hopefully be a mother- hopefully with a handful of foster or adopted kiddos in the bunch. ?It?s preparing me for being a social worker one day.

? ? ?When I started my first year of university, my family was in the middle of the home study process. ?I remember thinking on several occasions that the knives, cleaning supplies, etc. in my dorm at school were not safely stored. ?I can?t count how many times I turned pot handles into the middle of the stove without really thinking about it. ?When I started my second year, back home was a 5 week old baby girl we had had since she was 36 hours old (we had her until she was 10 months, but still have a great relationship with her and her bio parents, somewhat comparable to Tammy?s relationship with Monkey).? I remember waking up several times in the first few weeks that I was back at school, at about 3am - which is when Piglet would wake up for a feeding. ?I remember having several dreams where I was baby-sitting her in my dorm. Then I took my second semester off, and spent time at home - instead of mixing chemicals in a science lab, I was mixing bottles in our kitchen. ?Instead of learning about social work in a classroom, I was living it every day - especially as I went with Mom to visits, and as I learned some details of our girls? cases that allowed me to see how the agencies and government work. ?Foster care ruined my future plans - I had wanted to be a doctor, but when I returned to school, I switched to an Honours Social Work Major.?

? ? I remember this summer, when my sister and I went with my mom to drop our second foster sister, B, off for a visit at her mom and grandma?s. ?B?s family lives in city housing, so it was an area of the city where we had never been before. We joked that ?you may be a child of a foster parent if you don?t need a passport to travel to other parts of the world?. ?Foster care ruined my unrealistic view of the cities around us. ?And now, I?m in my last semester of my second year at school, and I can?t wait to get a phone call or text message from my mom telling me that I have a new baby brother or sister back at home. This morning I had a ?foster care affects me? moment. ?I was in a health psychology class and we were talking about the definition of one alcoholic beverage. ?I don?t drink, so when the professor was talking about how many ounces of wine, beer, etc. is considered one drink, in my head I was picturing ounces of formula in a bottle J

? ? ?It hasn?t all been great. ?I know I begged and prayed for years that my parents would foster, but I didn?t realize that at age 19, it was still possible to have feelings of jealousy when the new baby arrived. ?It certainly happened when Piglet came. ?I think it was made worse by the fact that she was our first placement, and I was just about to head back to school, so (even if it seems childish) there were times when it felt like I was being ?replaced? - Mom was often busy with Piglet, which was nobody?s fault, it just ?was?, but it meant that there were often times we?d be talking on the phone and she?d have to go because Piglet needed her.

? ? ?If you?re thinking about fostering, but you wonder if it will affect your other kids - it will. ?Their ?all about me? view of the world will be ruined, and they may need to have more responsibilities around the house (we often help with baby laundry, washing/making bottles, and a whole lot more). ?The increased responsibility will probably be good for them. ?They will learn new skills (maybe your two year old learns how to be gentle with babies, maybe your sixteen year old learns how to prepare a diaper bag before a visit or day trip). ?Yes, they may learn about the big, bad world - including drugs, alcohol, abuse, and neglect. You know what? They?re going to learn about those things one day. ?Instead of learning about how ?fun? drugs are from some kid at school, maybe your child will learn what a baby born addicted to crack looks like. Yes, fostering may ?ruin? your child?s life. ?And it probably won?t be a bad thing.

Anne (Foster Care Gave Me My Family) ? ? ?First of all, I have always wanted children.? There was never a time in my life when I didn?t want to be a Mom. ?When I was 8 years old, I was diagnosed with a rare Chromosomal abnormality that resulted in my being infertile. ?Since I was so young when I was diagnosed, I didn?t really understand or think about the implications of this for many years. ?As a teenager, I babysat frequently, so I could get my ?baby fix.? ?In college, I was busy doing the college thing (partying, even sometimes studying?J) and didn?t think too much about having children then, I knew I wasn?t ready.? When I did think about it, it was in kind of a vague way. I knew I probably could not get pregnant, but I wasn?t positive. ?I knew I wanted children, but I didn?t think too much at that time how I would get them.??

? ? ?It wasn?t until I was in my late 30?s that I really became serious about becoming a Mom. ?I knew by this time that I would not be able to have a baby biologically. ?I loved the idea of adopting, but felt that it was out of my reach financially, and that I?d never get approved as a single parent.? It was also at this time that I had a job working with children in the Foster Care system. ?I would go to their Foster homes and do developmental screenings with them.? I fell in love with these children, and often with the families who cared for them.

? ? ?For me, I knew I wanted a child, but I was scared to adopt on my own. ?I wasn?t sure I could be a good single parent. So, I decided to become a Foster parent. ?Somehow, that seemed like less of a commitment, and less responsibility (not sure how I figured that????) ?I took the Pride classes that the county required, and in April of 2006, I became a licensed Foster parent.?

? ? ?I waited eagerly for a placement. ?Finally, on June 2nd, while I was at work, I received a call about a new born baby girl who had been born two days earlier and needed to be picked up from the hospital. ?They weren?t sure how long she would stay with me, maybe two weeks, maybe 6 months. ?I immediately said yes, and frantically ran to Babies R Us to stock up on everything I thought I would need. ?Then I went to the hospital and brought home this sweet little girl, who I called ?Molly? and of course fell in love with her, and with being a Mom. ?I knew she would not be reunited with her mother, so I started to hope that I would be able to keep her. ?She ended up staying with me for 6 months, and then went out of state where she was adopted by an amazing, wonderful family that already had Molly?s older brother. ?I was devastated when Molly left, but deep down, I knew she was exactly where she was supposed to be. ?I knew that I was not Molly?s forever mother. ?I grieved for several months, and then decided that I was ready for another child, but this one was going to stay. ?I could not say goodbye to another baby. ?So I went through the process to get approved to adopt from the Foster Care system. ?

? ? ?I was officially approved on August 1st, 2007. This time around, I waited even more impatiently for ?the call.? ?And in early November, it came. ?My social worker called to tell me about a 4 month old little girl who had been in a foster home since birth, and needed a pre-adoptive home, since it was likely her parents? rights would be terminated. ?CPS was still providing reunification services with the parents, but the prognosis was poor it would work out. ?So I was what the county called a ?concurrent placement? - if reunification didn?t happen, then I would get to adopt the baby. ?Kind of risky, but I said yes immediately and never looked back. ?Two weeks later when I met with the social worker, and she showed me pictures of the baby, I was even more of a goner. ?Nothing could have made me say no to taking home this sweet little baby girl.??

? ? ?On November 30th, 2007, I finally met my daughter Elizabeth. ?Her social worker brought her to my apartment, and my little girl was sound asleep in the car seat in the back of the social worker?s car when I ran out to meet her. ?I gathered her up in my arms, and haven?t let go since. ?The adoption was finalized on March 4th, 2009. ?Elizabeth and I are a little family. ?Life is just so much better with her in it.

Kylee (Foster/Adopt Sibling and Social Work Major)?

? ? ?I will always remember the first foster placement that we brought into our home, just two weeks before my 8th birthday. She was only three-months-old and had twelve fractured ribs due to severe abuse. The first time I held her, her ribs popped with each breath she took. She had a huge fear of men, and her big brown eyes grew wide with terror every time someone approached her. I was young and knew very little about physical abuse, but I clearly remember questioning why any parent would hurt his child.

? ? ?In my young mind, I tried to imagine the scene that took place on the day she was hurt, based on snippets of information I had overheard our caseworker tell my mom. I tried to imagine an 18-year-old father who was so mad at his infant daughter that he abused her in such a horrible way. Even in my young mind, I knew this was not fair; I knew she deserved better. I now, years later, know that I was feeling empathy for the injustice this young child was experiencing.

? ? ?Throughout the next ten years, we had several young children come through our home from various backgrounds. They all had heart-breaking stories and mothers who loved them, yet often times did not make appropriate life decisions. The world I saw of drug-addicted babies and neglected children is one that motivates me to pursue justice. The statistics are mortifying, but when those bleak numbers are children whom I loved, cared for, and grew up with, that passion is even greater.

? ? ?One area of foster care that impacted me greatly was the parent visits and opportunity to meet the families of my foster siblings. It is really easy to love an abused baby, but meeting her family on Christmas day, so that they can celebrate the holiday with her, is much harder. As a child and teenager, it was so easy for me to judge these families because of the way they had hurt the children I had grown to love. I have struggled over and over again with forgiveness. As I work through these feelings, I am reminded of the deep love these parents have for their children, despite the way their lifestyle portrays that love. These encounters I often had with the biological families softened my heart and gave me greater empathy toward many areas of the social system.

? ? ?So here I am, sitting in my dorm room with a Social Welfare Policies midterm hanging over my head, and the steps of a client assessment cycling through my brain. My motivation is based off of the love I have for my many foster siblings, and the four young siblings who were adopted into our family?the children I now know as my forever siblings. Through this career path, I desire to pursue justice by advocating for the rights of children and vulnerable people and populations. I believe that if those who are oppressed can have a voice speak up for them, then vast changes can happen for the bettering of our society.

Nana (My Mommy and Best Nana Ever in My Completely Impartial and Unbiased Opinion ;-) -

? ? ?Ever since my daughter Tammy was a teenager she has wanted to be a mom.? She has always been great with kids and loved being around them so it didn't come as a surprise to me when she reached adulthood and she said that wanted to adopt her children one day.? Though the idea of being a mom has always been #1 in her mind the idea of pregnancy and giving birth was definitelty NOT something that appealed to her.

? ? ?As Tammy got into her 30s she started investigating what her adoption options would be.? Trying to adopt as a single person ( unless you are a rich celebrity) is almost impossible!? She has a good, steady job but, unfortunately, doesn't have an extra $25000+ to put towards the possiblity of an adoption!? So she started investigating the?foster to adopt option.? After much thought and prayer she decided this was her chance to be a mother.

? ? ?I have to be honest and say that I had very mixed feelings about Tammy becoming a foster parent.? I didn't know that much about CPS and the whole foster care program.? The few things I did know scared me to death!? What condition would the children come to her in?? How can she ever give the baby back if the situation was temporary?? There is NO WAY!!!? How can MY child who has so much love and devotion to give a child put herself in that situation?? I can't stand the thought of my child having her heart broken.? So many things went through my head and I was filled with fear.

? ? ?When Tammy said she wanted to take the required classes to get her license to be a foster parent she was nervous about going alone so I volunteered to take the classes with her.? Anyone who knows me knows that I have always done whatever I can do to help and make my kids dreams come true.? I also knew that I would have to take some of the classes to be an approved respite care provider for her if and when she got her child.? The classes were hours and hours of information and, to be honest, filled with a lot of stories meant to scare the prospective foster parents out of doing foster care.? If I had been considering doing foster care myself it would have worked!? But Tammy wanted this so much and she wasn't deterred.

? ? ?It took months for her first placement to arrive.? When the caseworker arrived with an 11 month old little girl "with a broken leg in a cast"? my heart fell through the floor!? The poor baby was in a full body cast from under the armpits to her feet!? There was no way Tammy would be able to care for the little thing!? After days and nights of sitting up holding the baby Tammy told them she couldn't do it.? She has learned a lot since then about the fact that if they misrepresent the case to you you dont have to accept it.?

? ? ?Then Tammy got the call for a little 7 month old boy that totally changed our lives.? Booger made a giant leap into my heart the moment they carried him through the door!? OMG!? He was just the sweetest thing you can imagine.? Little toothless grin.? I took him into the bedroom while they were filling out the paperwork and I was hooked.? He was MY grandchild from that moment forward.? AND the caseworkers told Tammy that they were pretty sure that he would have parental rights terminated and she would be able to adopt him!? As most of you know that didn't happen.? The most devestating time in our lives was when Tammy went to court and they told her THAT DAY that Booger was going to live with his Daddy immediately!? We were to have no contact after that.? She didn't even get to say goodbye to him.? I have never felt such a feeling of loss in my life and having to see the pain that my daughter went through is something I never want to see again (even though I'm sure I will at some point).?

? ? ?We didn't have any contact with Booger for about 6 months but then we were reunited with him AND his new little family and now we love them as much as him.? So this story has a good ending.? I'd love to say that it wipes out all of the pain from that time but I can't honestly say that.? Because of the way that Booger was taken so suddenly it has really put a fear in me.

? ? ?Tammy had two baby sisters for a few weeks and I really didn't get the chance to know them well or get as attached to them.? They were placed with their father and grandmother pretty quickly.? But during the time that she had the older girl the transformation was amazing!? You could tell the little thing had been neglected and didn't trust people.? She didn't smile.? By the time she left she was laughing and was in love with Tammy.?

? ? ?Then just a few weeks after my other daughter had the Mini Munchkins Tammy called and said she was getting a 2 month old baby boy!? Crazy, crazy timing!? I was so busy helping with the baby twins and the big twins that for most of the first year I didn't get to spend much time with Monkey at all.? Of course I suffered from tremendous Mama Guilt because I knew that Tammy needed my help but there is only so much Nana to spread around!? So I lived with a huge feeling of Nana Failure.? Because I hadn't had the time to spend with Monkey I really didn't bond with him as much as I would have otherwise.? I loved him but I just hadn't been with him as much.? The strange thing is that I didn't bond UNTIL he went back to live with his daddy!? At that time we worked out a plan for me to watch Monkey 3 mornings a week so his daddy could get some sleep since he works nights.? That has given us time to really get to know each other.? Monkey is an awesome little guy and very funny.? We have now "bonded."?? But I have to admit I'm still terrified of the day when Monkey's daddy will decide he doesn't need our help anymore and I pray that he won't take him and disappear from our lives.

? ? ?I haven't admitted it to many people but I still have a huge fear of the foster care system.? I'm so proud of Tammy for being the wonderful mom that she is and giving these little ones all of her love without holding back.? People don't understand how hard it is being a foster family.? Knowing that you are opening yourself up for heartbreak that can come at any time.? But when you hold these little ones and they give you those sweet slobbery baby kisses and hugs it is so worth it.? I will say that I'm still praying that the day will come when Tammy will get to adopt and we will never have to say goodbye.? But I also know that God has called Tammy to be a Mom to as many children as she can.? Even if it is only for a short time and I will be their Nana and love them, too.

Blood Testing for Spotting Cancer Triggered by Asbestos Exposure ...

Mesothelioma is the most serious health risk caused by asbestos exposure. It is often difficult to diagnose because symptoms mimic those of other ailments. But a new study which found that blood test can look for mesothelioma biomarker may just be what health care providers need for early detection and treatment of the disease.

The ?study, published in the Oct. 11 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that blood test, along with a lung fluid test, looks for a protein called fibulin-3 in plasma. The researchers measured ?fibulin-3 levels in 92 people with mesothelioma, 136 people who were exposed to asbestos but didn?t have cancer, 93 patients with fluid in their lungs that wasn?t caused by mesothelioma, and 43 healthy people with no asbestos exposure ? all of which came from Detriot and New York City.

In addition, the researchers tested lung fluid in 74 people with mesothelioma, 39 with fluid in their lungs but no cancer and 54 with fluid in their lungs and a cancer other than mesothelioma.

?In the mesothelioma patients, fibulin-3 was four to five times higher than in asbestos-exposed individuals,? said study author Dr. Harvey Pass, a professor of thoracic oncology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, in the Healthday.com report.

But while the finding appears promising, additional test may still be needed to confirm the study?s findings. Even Pass admits that he?d like to?perform trial on people who were exposed to asbestos but don?t have symptoms to see if fibulin-3 can pick up mesothelioma prior the appearance of symptoms.

According to the latest statistics, malignant mesothelioma has claimed approximately 18,000 lives in the United States between 1995 and 2005. Construction workers and those who work in related industry are at higher risk of getting exposed to asbestos. Similarly, homeowners who perform DIY projects like tearing walls or cleaning boilers may also be at risk especially if their homes were built or remodeled between the years 1900 and 1978.

Dems lead GOP in battleground voter registration

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A robust registration push by President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has resulted in more Democrats than Republicans on the voter rolls in most battleground states, including Florida and Nevada, according to data from state election boards.

But Republicans have had their own registration success, narrowing the Democratic voter advantage since 2008 in many of the battlegrounds, including Iowa. And party officials say they have put more resources into persuading independent voters who are already registered to cast their ballots for party nominee Mitt Romney.

"We do not put as big an emphasis on voter registration programs as we do in talking to and persuading independents," said Rick Wiley, political director for the Republican National Committee. "I would prefer to go in and talk to an independent who is already registered. They have a voter history."

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said his campaign "can do both things ? both persuade the undecideds and get out our voters."

The Democratic campaign also says a deeper look at the registration numbers shows an uptick in new Hispanic voters and voters under the age of 30 ? voting blocs where the president has an advantage.

Obama's registration and get-out-the-vote operations in 2008 played a crucial role in his getting elected. With the White House race tightening less than four weeks from Election Day, the Democratic campaign is banking on its organization in the battleground states to give Obama an edge.

Deadlines to vote in the November election have passed in many states, but the registration totals are expected to shift somewhat in the coming days as last-minute entries are counted.

The most current data, available from state election boards, give Democrats a registration advantage in most of the battleground states with party identification: Florida, Iowa, North Carolina and Nevada. The party also significantly outpaces Republican registration in Pennsylvania by more than 1 million voters. That's part of the reason Romney's campaign has not made a serious effort to compete in the state.

Republicans have a voter registration advantage in Colorado and New Hampshire.

Voters in three other battleground states ? Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin ? do not register with a party when they sign up to vote.

Of course, voter registration totals don't tell the whole electoral story in many states.

That's been particularly true in North Carolina, where there have long been more Democratic voters than Republicans. This year, the Democrats have a 790,000 voter advantage.

But many registered Democrats in North Carolina cast their presidential ballots with the GOP. Obama's narrow victory there in 2008 marked the first time a Democrat won the state since 1976. And about one-fourth of registered voters in the state are registered independents.

Republicans are touting their success in cutting into Democratic registration leads. In Iowa, for example, there were more than 100,000 more Democrats on the voters rolls when Obama won the state in 2008. This year that margin has dropped to just under 13,000.

Obama's campaign says it is already making up for that decline by aggressively ensuring Democrats on the rolls get to the polls, particularly during early voting. According to the campaign, 50,000 more Democrats than Republicans have already cast their votes by mail and in person.

Aides to the president are also buoyed by increased battleground state registration among Hispanics and young people, key sources of support for Obama.

Since August, the campaign says about half of new registrants in most battleground states have been under the age of 30. Hispanic registration is also up this year in every key electoral state except Ohio.

State by state data shows Hispanics have increasingly registered as Democrats since 2008.

'Musical' mice learn new songs

US researchers say that mice may have the ability to learn songs based on the sounds they hear.

They found that when male mice were housed together they learned to match the pitch of their songs to each other.

Mice also share some behavioural and brain mechanisms involved in vocal learning with songbirds and humans, say the researchers.

But some scientists are sceptical, saying the evidence doesn't support the claim.

Details of the study are published in the Journal, Plos One.

Previous research in this field has shown that male mice can sing complex songs when exposed to females and these play an important part in courtship.

These murine serenades are ultrasonic. At between 50 and 100KHz, they are far above the hearing range of humans. When processed to make them audible to humans, they sound like a series of plaintive whistles.

Rare skill

It has long been assumed that mice were incapable of modifying the sequence or the pitch of these sounds. This ability, called vocal learning, is rare in the natural world. It is restricted to some birds such as parrots and song birds along with whales, dolphins, sea lions, bats and elephants.

But in these experiments, researchers from Duke University in North Carolina say they found that mice have both the brain circuits and the behavioural attributes consistent with vocal learning.

Dr Erich Jarvis, who oversaw the study, told BBC News that it had changed his understanding of the way mice make sound.

"In mice we find that the pathways that are at least modulating these vocalisations are in the forebrain, in places where you actually find them in humans," he said.

He says the study does not have clear evidence that mice have the very same vocal abilities as birds and humans. He believes there is a spectrum where different species have vocal skills to different degrees.

"We think mice are intermediate in this ability between a chicken and a song bird or even a non human primate and a human," he said.

Living in harmony

When male mice with different vocal pitches were housed together, the team found that the pitch of their songs gradually converged over a period of eight weeks.

Dr Jarvis argues that this is an important development: "When we put a female in the cage with two males, we then found that one male would change his pitch to match the other. It was usually the smaller animal changing the pitch to match the larger animal," he said.

But others are less certain. Dr Kurt Hammerschmidt, an expert in vocal communication at the German Primate Centre in Goettingen, cast doubt on the study's claim about the vocal behaviour of male mice.

"The pitch convergence story is less convincing," he says.

But Erich Jarvis refutes this, saying the scepticism is unfounded.

"His complaint was that we don't have enough animals, but we found this in 12 mouse pairs and in every single pair... at least in our eyes it's quite reliable and statistically significant," he said.
